How does Acupuncture work? Can it help me?

This is, as you might imagine, a very broad question. To do it real justice requires a bit of education from your practitioner, which will be covered completely in your initial intake and refined during follow-up treatments. Acupuncture involves placing needles in specific points on the body in specific combinations to help balance your body’s energy flow. Acupuncture in combination with herbal medicine can help adjust and harmonize the functions of all the systems and organs in the body as well as their interaction. By helping balance these functions of the body acupuncture and herbal medicine can help your body return itself to health. No matter what your problem, acupuncture and herbal medicine can help. How much will it cost?

Acupuncture:
New patient visits are $90 and include an acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture treatments are a flat rate of $60 for return patients.

Herbal supplements vary in cost but roughly are between $25 and $45 per bottle.

Is acupuncture painful?

No. Acupuncture needles are very fine, up to four of them can fit inside a hypodermic type needle that is commonly used to draw blood and administer medication. With the assistance of a guide tube, the needles are rapidly tapped through the skin (the most sensitive part) and then the needle is inserted to the proper depth, usually less than one inch. Sometimes sensations of tingling, heaviness, or warmth are felt and often no sensation is felt at all.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on a few things. Much like physical therapy, a schedule of treatments works best, from frequent at first (one to two times per week) and tapering off as you improve, to twice per month and eventually a few times per year or not at all. The best guide is one to two treatments per week for the first three weeks, then once a week for three weeks and then reassessment. Many patients only require the initial six weeks of treatment, but some naturally will need more. Exactly how many you will need is mostly dependent on how you respond in the initial weeks of treatment. A few things, however, that determine how quickly you will heal are: age, length and severity of injury or illness, compliance with dietary/lifestyle/herbal recommendations and your overall state of health.

Are the needles sterilized?

All needles used at AcuCare Clinic are single-use, pre-sterilized, surgical steel needles. They are all disposed of immediately after use in a medical waste/bio-hazard container and properly discarded by a medical waste disposal company.

Where do your herbs come from? Are they safe?

All of the herbal companies that we use at AcuCare Clinic to provide our herbs are either grown and prepared in America by strict GMP standards or in China and are subjected to the same standards before entering the American market.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Insurance coverage varies widely from company to company. If you are unsure, check with your provider before your first appointment. AcuCare Clinic does not file for insurance reimbursement for its patients, but instead provides a detailed receipt with the proper reimbursement codes which the patients can file themselves with their provider. Flex Accounts and Health Savings Accounts almost always cover acupuncture, massage and herbs but check your policy to be sure.

How long will a treatment take?

Your first treatment session will take up to 90 minutes. During this time we will conduct a comprehensive health history intake, discuss your condition, how it developed, and what it means in Chinese medical terms. Then we will discuss what we will do to help correct your condition and what you can do at home to help things progress. Follow-up treatments will be much shorter and often will take just one hour.

Will acupuncture or herbal medicine interfere with any treatments or medications I am currently receiving from my doctor?

Not at all. Acupuncture and herbal medicine work very well with traditional western medical treatments and usually provide you with the best possible chance for full recovery in the shortest time possible.
